After earning his Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois in 1987, Lefton held positions at the University of California, Riverside and the University of New Orleans before joining the faculty of Georgia Tech in 1999. In his current role as Associate Vice President for Research Computing, he provides campus leadership on strategic technology investments, agile and sustainable cyberinfrastructure, and leveraging and managing research data to advance the campus research enterprise. Lefton also has a half time appointment as Assistant Dean of Information Technology for the College of Sciences where he manages the Academic and Research Computing Services organization, which provides coordinated technology support.
His other interests include applications of humor, the maker movement, and hands-on STEAM education.
